Choosing the right builder affects your home's quality. It also shapes resale value and how the house works for your family over the years. The wrong choice can bring delays, surprise costs, and a layout that does not fit.

I have built homes across the Houston area since 2010. I bought Dunn & Stone in 2019. I have sat across the table from buyers who nearly signed with the wrong company. This guide shares what I learned about telling builders apart.

We put Dunn & Stone first. Every builder on this list clears the bar we set for our own work. You can judge for yourself.

If you compare home builders in Houston, start with how each one prices, plans, and stands behind the work. Those three factors often separate a smooth build from a stressful one.

Best Home Builders in Houston at a Glance

Dunn & Stone Builders and Jamestown Estate Homes stand out on the points buyers ask about most. Both build on land you own. Both let you customize. They serve different parts of the market and different budgets.

Ratings are current as of June 2026. They come from each builder's Houzz profile. For Dunn & Stone, we also checked the Better Business Bureau.

Dunn & Stone Builders

We have built homes across the Houston area since 1999. We have completed more than 1,000 homes. We remain family-owned. We hold an A+ rating and accreditation with the Better Business Bureau. We carry a 4.8 rating on Houzz. We belong to the Greater Houston Builders Association.

You can see the homes behind these numbers in our completed-homes gallery. If the work looks like a fit, we can talk through your lot and your plan.

What we build

We build semi-custom homes. We start with a floor plan from our proven library. Then we shape it around your family. We do not draw new plans from scratch. Untested layouts tend to surprise people once the walls go up. We have spent decades refining the plans we offer instead.

We focus on building on land you own. Most of our work sits across Conroe, The Woodlands, Pinehurst, Magnolia, Montgomery, Willis, Tomball, and Houston. We also handle waterfront builds on Lake Conroe. You can see the full map on our where we build page. We do not build in Pearland.

Our Houston roots show up in the details that protect a home here. A sloped waterfront lot on Lake Conroe often needs pier-and-beam construction. That work can add $65,000 to $120,000. We plan for that early. It stays a line item instead of a surprise.

What it costs

Our recent portfolio runs about $213 per square foot on average. Homes with our included features land near $180 per foot. A moderate level of selections runs near the $213 average. A highly featured or smaller home runs closer to $250.

Our current average sales price is around $722,000. If your budget pushes well past $300 per square foot, another builder may serve you better. We tell buyers in that range directly that we may not fit as the best builder for them.

You can estimate your own range with our cost-to-build calculator. For a full breakdown, read our guide on how much it costs to build a house.

How long it takes

Our recent builds have averaged about seven months from groundbreaking to move-in. The fastest finished in five months. The longest ran close to eleven months. That project waited while the owner cleared an old structure off the lot before we could start.

Your timeline depends on size, weather, and how many changes come up during the build. Our build timeline guide walks through what drives each stage.

How we stand behind the home

We back every home with our own 1/2/10 warranty. Year one covers everything. Year two covers the mechanical systems inside the walls. Years two through ten cover the foundation, framing, and structure. A StrucSure structural warranty backs us on the structure.

If something needs attention, you call, email, or text us directly. There is no claims portal to fight through. We aim to resolve emergencies like plumbing, electrical, or AC within 24 hours. Most other items resolve within 20 days. The after-close service is how we earn our referrals.

Jamestown Estate Homes

Jamestown Estate Homes has built a strong name in Houston's luxury market. The company is family-owned and female-led. It was founded in 2010. It carries a 4.6 rating on Houzz.

They handle build-on-your-lot projects and spec homes. Their real strength is fully custom work. Their portfolio leans high-end. They have won Custom Builder of the Year honors from the Greater Houston Builders Association.

Their focus sits closer to the inner loop and the Memorial-area villages. We work mostly across Montgomery County and North Houston. If you want a fully custom home in those neighborhoods, with finishes and features you choose from a blank page, their process supports that well.

Other Houston Home Builders Worth Researching

These builders earned a place for specific strengths. They do not always offer every service our top choices provide. The list groups them by focus so you can match them to your needs. Reviews and ratings change. Check each builder's current Google, Houzz, and BBB profiles before you reach out.

Production and master-planned community builders

Toll Brothers brings national scale to Houston's master-planned communities. These include Bridgeland, Sienna, and Elyson. They fit move-up buyers who want a polished home with built-in neighborhood amenities.

Chesmar Homes is a production builder with a presence in communities like Elyson and Tavola. They run their own mortgage and title services. That setup appeals to buyers who want a move-in-ready home soon.

Colina Homes builds on your lot at a more reachable price point. That makes them worth a look for first-time buyers and families watching their budget closely.

Luxury and fully custom builders

Legion Custom Home Builders builds luxury custom homes and remodels. They have a following in Bellaire and West University.

Echo Custom Homes has built in Houston for more than twenty years. Their portfolio spans fully custom estates and high-end remodels.

Sabo Custom Home Builders focuses on high-end custom homes and large remodels. The owner stays personally involved in projects.

Southern Green Builders has shaped neighborhoods like The Heights and Memorial for decades. They build custom homes and handle major renovations.

DHY Texas Builders handles luxury custom homes and large-scale remodels. They keep a design-build process under one roof.

Blum Custom Builders is an owner-led firm with more than twenty years in Houston's custom market. They focus on energy-efficient design.

Alleanza Custom Homes builds high-end custom homes and nothing else. They work as a boutique builder.

Aspire Fine Homes is a small luxury builder. Their work ranges from Southern-inspired designs to sleek modern homes.

Unika Homes is a boutique builder focused on modern, high-end custom homes. They keep a small, hands-on team.

Alair Homes runs as a national franchise with locally owned offices. They build fully custom homes and major renovations. They use a project-management system that keeps budgets and timelines visible.

Specialty and niche builders

Zander Homes focuses on energy-efficient custom homes and townhomes built on your land.

CRV Homes builds modern, energy-efficient custom homes with smart-home features and green certifications.

Cityside Homes focuses on townhomes and urban infill across central Houston. Many projects include rooftop terraces.

How We Chose the Builders on This List

We wanted this list to reflect builders with established reputations. We did not select names at random.

Every builder here holds a steady record of public reviews on Google, Houzz, or the Better Business Bureau. Each one also shows a portfolio of finished work you can verify. We leaned toward builders who serve the Greater Houston area and who show their work openly. Ratings shift over time. Confirm each builder's current standing before you commit.

We gave top spots to builders who offer build-on-your-lot service, plans you can customize, spec home options, and financing support. They also needed a clear record of completed homes. We favored builders who start with proven base plans you can personalize. Fully custom projects drawn from scratch often run into trouble once construction starts.

How to Choose a Home Builder in Houston

After years of this work, the choice comes down to trust. You hand someone one of your largest purchases.

Start with reputation. Read reviews on Google, Houzz, and the BBB. Look for patterns rather than single comments. Steady praise signals reliability. Repeated complaints about the same issue deserve attention.

Then study the portfolio. A builder's past work shows both their design range and their care with details. If the photos do not match what you want, keep looking. Our list of questions to ask a home builder can help before you commit.

Get the full scope in writing before you sign anything.

I once met a couple about to sign with a well-regarded builder. At the final contract meeting, that builder added about $70,000 to the price.

The site plan had left off the driveway and the power line to the house. Those costs appeared at the last minute. The couple walked away and built with us instead. That builder carried a strong reputation. The story surprised me.

This pattern appears with some builders. Some quote only what sits inside the Sheetrock walls. Basics like the gas and electric runs to your dryer become surprise upgrades. Site costs like silt fencing, dumpsters, and portable toilets get left off until closing. Buyers already sit at their loan limit by then.

Ask what is included and what is not, item by item. Compare builders on the same scope. For more on this, see our guide on how to choose a home builder and our breakdown of the hidden costs of building a house.

Custom vs. Production vs. Semi-Custom Builders in Houston

Houston builders tend to fall into three groups. Knowing the difference saves confusion.

Production builders offer set floor plans inside master-planned communities. You get affordability and predictability. Personalization stays limited to design packages.

Custom builders design a home from the ground up around your lot and your life. You get the most freedom. You usually pay more and wait longer.

Semi-custom builders sit between those two. We start with a proven base plan. Then we let you personalize it. You keep flexibility without the risk that comes with an untested design.

If budget and speed matter most, a production builder may fit. If design freedom is the priority, a custom or semi-custom builder will serve you better. You can read more in our breakdown of custom and production homes and our look at our semi-custom approach.
